Living in the Northern Shenandoah Valley

Have you ever wondered what is it like to live and work close to all the places where you love to play? Whether it’s more space, more time, or more peace of mind, you can “trade-up” to a better life in the Northern Shenandoah Valley. We have plenty to see & do!

  • If you're dreaming of A HOUSE with a lawn and picket fence – we’ve got you covered. There are plenty of towns and neighborhoods to choose from across the NSV.

  • If APARTMENT LIVING is more your style, we’ve got that, too – and everything in between. You’ll find that average rentals are lower than most surrounding urban areas, and our commutes can be shorter – and more pleasant – than the slog of city traffic.

  • For GROWING FAMILIES, the Northern Shenandoah Valley offers top-ranked public and private school options. And as your kids take off for college, living in Virginia means in-state tuition for the Virginia Community College System as well as many nationally recognized universities, like UVA, James Madison University, and Virginia Tech.

Your salary goes farther in the NSV!

Our cost-of-living calculator pulls data from across the country in a handy comparison table. To understand what a move to the valley can mean for you and your future, enter your information to learn how much you need to earn to maintain your lifestyle.

The Good News: Our region’s salary scale is comparable to most of the country. That means the same work and similar pay can net you more money in the bank at the end of the month.

How to Use the Calculator

  1. First enter your current salary and the location you are leaving.

  2. Select VA-WV Winchester as your destination to compare what it costs to live here versus where you live now.

  3. The calculator shows you how much you need to earn to maintain your current lifestyle.

The VA-WV Winchester Metropolitan Statistical Area

The VA-WV Winchester MSA is a U.S. Metropolitan Statistical Area defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. It includes the City of Winchester and Frederick County, Virginia, and Hampshire County, WV. The calculator tool compares MSA’s across the U.S. The data for the Cost of Living Index is managed by The Council for Community and Economic Research.

If you are curious, here is the methodology used in the Cost of Living comparison tool.
