The Shenandoah Valley is quickly becoming known throughout the state as having some of the best climate and soil for growing wine-producing grapes. It’s no wonder that the region is booming with fabulous wineries and it has become a terrific destination for wine enthusiasts who love a beautiful scenic drive and wine-tasting with a view.
In Clarke County, west of DC and at the top of Virginia is home to Veramar Vineyard. Since 2000 they have been producing fine wines and offering tastings, wine tours and special events. The vineyard boasts 24 acres of vines on an Eastern-facing hillside and just a mile from the Shenandoah River. Their wines have received 61 ratings of 85 points or higher from Wine Enthusiast Magazine, as well as numerous medals at Decanter World Wine Awards, the most prestigious wine competition anywhere in the world.
Further west is Frederick County best known for its historic city of Winchester and a downtown with great shopping and dining. In the outskirts there are rolling hills and a few great wineries like James Charles Winery where you can stop in for a tasting, a tour or reserve space for a special event. Valerie Hill Vineyard & Winery is located south of Winchester and set on an 18 acre farm, Valerie Hill is known for its great wines but also for the special history of its Manor House where the tasting room is set.
With the Alleghenies to the west and the Blue Ridge to the east, Shenandoah County is uniquely positioned to host some of the most spectacular wineries as it is known for its dry climate, ideal soil and elevation. It's no wonder that it is home to eight different wineries. Among them, one of the oldest in the state, Shenandoah Vineyards. Recently acquired by winemaker, Michael Shaps Shenandoah Vineyards offers award winning Cabernet Sauvignon and Reserve Red. Other wineries not to be missed and each with incredible views are Star in the Valley Estate Winery, North Mountain Vineyards, Muse Vineyards, Cave Ridge Vineyards and The Winery at Kindred Pointe. If it all seems like too much, you can always reserve a ride at Shenandoah Wine Tours to take you on a tasting tour at several of these great spots.
East of the Blue Ridge near the famous Luray Caverns in Page County is Wisteria Farm and Vineyard with their Pinot Gris, Chardonnay (oak and steel), Viognier, Traminette, Seyval, Vidal, Petit Verdot, Carmine, and Norton. They also offer three semi-sweet blends (Velvet, Ashtaroot, and Adonis) and a dessert wine (Sweet Daisy). If you’re out tasting wines in the area you can also stop in at Castle Vineyards or Luray Caverns Vineyard.
